Things to do in Union, Cove & North Powder

From the popular outdoor playground of Anthony Lakes, where trails are open year-round, take advantage of adventures in any season. In winter, this alpine area is a great mix of runs ranging from beginner to expert. There are also groomed trails available for Nordic (cross-country) skiing. During warmer months, mountain bikers take to the trails for elevated climbs and downhill routes. Camping, paddle boarding and lake adventures await.  Taking a break between runs? Stop by North Powder Cafe' where they serve bigger-than-your-face plates for breakfast, lunch, and dinner at this family-owned, uber-friendly spot.

For places to stay, head to Antone Creek Lodge, where a collection of outfitted cabins are just down the road from Anthony Lakes Mountain Resort. It’s a perfect sanctuary set in nature with the creek running nearby.

From North Powder head toward Union and pick up the Grande Ronde Farm Trail for a day exploring family farms and scenic sites. The orchards, ranches, and gardens of the Grande Ronde Valley invite you to stock up on seasonal produce, farm fresh eggs and protein, as well as handmade goods. Swing by RattleTale Coffee & Such, an eclectic and inviting coffee shop in the heart of town, for an afternoon pick-me-up.  Looking for a unique gift idea, check out the Union Merc, they offer an array of curated vintage and collectibles as well as goods created by our talented local artisans.

Spend the afternoon on the greens at Buffalo Peak Golf Course. The course was recently awarded the Oregon Golf Association's "Best Facility in the State".  Open to the public, Buffalo Peak Golf Course is only 12 minutes from I-84 on the east side of town.  Come have a unique golfing experience on the Par 72.

Looking for a Museum with rich community history? Stop by the Union County Museum featuring Cowboys Then & Now.  The Museum is much larger than you might expect and rich in history of this community and Union County.

Take your farm stand finds over to Catherine Creek State Park and spread a picnic under the ponderosa pines. When you’re ready to get moving again, enjoy an easy 3-mile hike over the creek and looping through the park. Anglers are welcome to fish for rainbow trout in the cool stream waters; be sure to pick up an ODFW permit at a nearby store before dropping in a line. Or if you’d rather stay in town, grab a table on the back patio at LJ Brewskis and choose from their daily specials, homemade desserts, and rotating list of craft beers and local wines.

Let the evening lead you to cocktail hour at Steakhouse at Cove and then the toughest decision of the night – prime rib, New York strip or flat iron steaks.

Book camp cabins at Ascension School in Cove, perfect for hosting group and family gatherings. The grounds showcase the iconic Ascension Chapel, views of the surrounding valley, and a lush lawn, which makes this retreat center ideal for reunions and events.

Continue exploring the Grande Ronde Farm Trail around Cove with its over 500 acres of orchards and delightful honey stands. If you’re craving classic fast-food – shakes, burgers, fries, and towering cones of soft-serve – Cove Drive-In has been a local favorite for generations.
